This Department is an amalgamation of the traditional public works, building and planning units found elsewhere and it was created to provide direct services to the public in a more efficient manner.

The Director is responsible to Town Council for staff supervision and the operational effectiveness of the offices of the Chief Building Official (CBO), General Foreman and Town Planner, working in concert with others to provide property developers with convenient "one-stop-shopping" service when seeking permits and required approvals.

Enforcement of the Ontario Building code, the minimum standard level for public health, safety, access, fire protection and structural safety of buildings is the task of the CBO.

The Planner is responsible for ensuring that all municipal development takes place in accordance with existing By-laws, the Official Plan and related legislation. In Renfrew, the Planner acts as the Town Clerk and as Secretary-Treasurer of the Committee of Adjustment.

Year-round maintenance of Town streets, sidewalks, open spaces and landscaping is the concern of the General Foreman in addition to water, waste and sewage distribution and treatment systems.

Departmental office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
