Active in working
to develop Renfrew since the late 1950’s, the Renfrew Industrial
Commission came into its own in 1992 when the Ontario Government granted
$2.45 million to attract new business, restart existing but vacant plants
and to stimulate existing business and industry. That project was unique
in Ontario and it was a resounding success. All plants left empty during
the recession of the early 1990’s have now been filled and new business
occupants are prospering. Many new smaller businesses have been
established and play an active role in the everyday affairs of the
community.
In January 1998,
the Commission, acting upon their strategic plan, recognized the need to
increase Renfrew’s population as a way to further develop the town
economically. A program was subsequently developed to focus on the hi-tech
industry in Ottawa and upon individuals who were retired or planning
retirement.
One of the key
elements of this program was the development of this web site, designed to
be informative and as comprehensive as budgets permit. A second initiative
involved placing advertisements in Ottawa and area newspapers and
publications directed to the seniors market.
Launched in
September 1998, the web site is now visited by over 300 visitors a week.
More telling, between the Commission and the Chamber of Commerce, over a
dozen enquiries a month are now being received from people expressing an
interest in moving to Renfrew.
The Renfrew
Industrial Commission consists of a volunteer President and six members
from the community, supported by a full-time Manager. Located in the Fire
Hall building at 152 Plaunt Street, appointments can be made by calling
during office hours, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.
